Anne attended the Welshpool village school, where she was a student of her Aunt Polly (Miss Mary Margaret Mitchell). When the family removed to Gardner, Mass., in 1923, she attended Gardner schools, where she was captain of the girls’ basketball team.
In 1939, she married Gilbert Gordon Starkey, of Baldwinville, Mass.
A homemaker through most of her life, she had an early interest in collecting antique furniture, which she refinished and re-upholstered. An avid and enthusiastic knitter and seamstress, she was never seen without her knitting needles and produced dozens of sweaters for family members.
The favourite story of their boyhood, sons Gil and Don often recalled how she once pinned a dress, fabric and pattern, on a bed and proceeded to cut up the bedspread!
In retirement, Anne and her husband, Gilbert, purchased and renovated the Isabel Vennel estate in Welshpool. After her husband’s death, Anne built a smaller home on an adjacent property.
She is survived by her son, Gilbert Gordon Starkey, Jr.; grandsons, Perry, Brian, Eric and Jonathan; and nine great-grandchildren. Burgess, Marjorie Annie

With great sadness we announce that our mother, Marjorie Annie (Clingo) Burgess, of 500-110 Venus Court, Fredericton, N.B., passed away at the Dr. Everett Chalmers Hospital on Friday, March 7, 2008.
Marjorie was predeceased in 1991 by Charles, her husband of over 50 years. She was also predeceased by her parents, John and Maude Clingo; her brother, Derek Clingo; and two sisters, Eileen Ebbett and Kathleen Gaunce.
She is survived by three sons and their families: John (Janet) and Paul (Marlene), of Fredericton, N.B., and Keith (Sheree), of Smithfield, N.B. She will be sadly missed by her grandchildren: Nancy, Brian, Carl, Kirsten, Karen, and Whitney; by her great-grandchildren: Avery, Alicia, Brandon, Christopher, and Phillip; and by many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by one sister, Joan Moore, of Fredericton, N.B., and one brother, Keith Clingo, of Quispamsis, N.B.
Born in England in 1913, Marjorie immigrated to Canada with her family in 1921, and lived in Upper Hampstead, near Gagetown.
She was a registered nurse by profession, having studied in Saint John, and graduated from the nursing program at the former Chipman Memorial Hospital in St. Stephen, N.B., in 1937. Marjorie and Charles resided in Milltown, N.B., with their three sons until they moved to Fredericton (Silverwood) in 1958.
Following Charles' death, Marjorie moved to her Venus Court condominium, where she enjoyed the friendship of many wonderful close neighbours.
Marjorie was a member of the Christ Church Parish Church.
For many years as a nurse, she cared for others, first in St. Stephen and then in Fredericton. After retiring from nursing, her caring for others took many forms, including visiting and helping those in need, providing knitting for the church and the Salvation Army, and sharing her celebrated rolls and pies with many who enjoyed them. Barkley especially enjoyed her affectionate greetings and the special doggie treats which she always had for him.
Her sons feel truly blessed to have had her as a vital part of their lives for so many great years. We treasure the knowledge that her family meant so very much to her.
It was Mom's wish to have no visitation, and she requested only a simple service. She wanted us to remember her in our hearts.
Memorial donations may be made to the Chalmers Hospital Foundation, or a charity of the donor's choice.
Arrangements are being provided by Bishop's Funeral Home, 540 Woodstock Road, Fredericton.
A funeral service will be scheduled at a later date, and her ashes will be interred beside her late husband, Charles, in the St. John's Anglican Church Cemetery in Gagetown, N.B.

Matthews, Captain Burris W.

Surrounded by his daughter and granddaughters, Burris W. Matt-hews went to be with his Lord on April 21, 2008, after courageously weathering the effects of Alzhei-mers for several years. The son of Clarence and Aggie (Dow) Matthews, he was born on Campobello Island, N.B., on Dec. 8, 1919, one of nine children.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother and lifelong business partner, Medford Matthews, and sisters: Betty Jackson, Royce Calder, Jewel Calder and Phyllis Babcock, all of Campobello.
He is survived by sisters: Lorene Barteau, of Deer Island, N.B., and Della Mathews; and brother, Ivan Matthews, of Campobello, N.B.
Burris was married to Jean (Jackson) Matthews on Campobello. They built a house on the hill at the site of the “old school house,” where they lived happily until Jean went to be with the Lord on Nov 3, 1986, and where Burris continued to live until shortly before his passing.
Burris is survived by their daughter, Donna (Savage) Adams, of Campobello, N.B.; five grandchildren: Terri (Don) Brown, Susan (Jim) MacFeat, Angela (Joe) Stuart, Andrew (Heather) Savage, and Kim Savage; six grandchildren: Jim and Molly Brown, Erica and Heather MacFeat, and Brett and Jessica Stuart.
He was predeceased by his son-in- law, Steven Adams.
Burris married his second wife, Norma Matthews, in January 1988, with whom he enjoyed nearly 20 years of companionship.
He is survived by Norma, of Georgia, U.S.A.; her children, Dianne (John) Speirs, and Richard (Carrie) Davis; grandchildren, Paul (Laurie) Speirs and Tracy (Ronnie) Prince; and great-grandchildren: Jarod, Alex and Sydney.
He was predeceased by Norma’s son, Bobby (Gale) Davis.
A small man with a tenacious work ethic, sharp mind and sometimes ornery determination, Burris was a fisherman who devoted his working life to the family business with his father and brothers, Medford and Ivan. They began fishing in small boats with their father in and around Campobello. Collectively, they made significant contributions to the fishing industry, particularly purse seining. At the time of retirement, they owned and operated two 120-foot steel purse seiners with state-of-the-art technology that they helped create.
Captain Matthews piloted ships safely through Head Harbour passage to Bayside for more than 20 years. A gifted navigator and boat handler, Burris earned the respect of many ships’ Captains. He was as comfortable and capable in command on the bridge of a 750-foot ship as he was on a fishing boat.
At age 75, he was still able to ascend the rope ladder on the side of a ship quickly and with ease.
Burris was a man of faith who lived by example and who was truly devoted and committed to his family. Always willing to help, advice was given when requested, assistance was provided when needed, and plain truth always revealed by his “twitting facts” and “the way I sees it,” sometimes to make a point but always with his humorous wit which made those around him smile.
While saddened at his passing, everyone can find comfort in knowing that he is no longer suffering and is at home with the Lord. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.
Services will be from Wilson’s Beach Baptist Church on Friday, April 25, 2008 at 2 p.m., with Pastor Robert Weaver.

JoAnne left Milltown and moved to Fredericton in 1958 and began working with the provincial government for the Department of Natural Resources, where she met her husband, Barry. She later worked for Maritime Bricklayers Ltd. They were always together.

She could make friends with anyone, and always did so effortlessly. Everyone that knew her will remember her kind, compassionate, generous and fun-loving spirit. She and Barry formed many lasting friendships over the years that meant a great deal to them.
But the most important thing to JoAnne was her family. In addition to her husband, Barry, JoAnne is survived by her son, Jarret, and his wife, Melissa, of Fredericton, N.B.; her sister, Carmeline Avery, of St. Stephen, N.B.; her sister, Sandra Jardine, of Fredericton, N.B., her brother, Jeff Legacé, and his wife, Janice, of Fredericton, N.B.; nieces, Trudi Jardine and Katherine Legacé, both of Fredericton, N.B., and several special cousins.

Pedersen-Mjaanes, Hjalmar

Hjalmar Pedersen-Mjaanes was born in Kvalsund, Norway, 350 miles north of the Arctic Circle, on Aug. 23, 1929. He grew up during the war, when Norway was under German occupation, which meant he was separated from his family for long periods so that he could continue his schooling in the south. He graduated with a Masters degree in economics from the University of Oslo, and came to Canada in the 1950s, where he worked for Massey Ferguson and later, Domtar.
While at Massey, he also obtained an MBA from the University of Toronto.
Life later brought him to New Brunswick, where he settled in St. Stephen with his wife, Gillian, and his son and daughter, Haakon and Victoria. He loved to ski and swim. Each year he tried to swim a little later than the year before and once actually swam at Oak Bay until as late as Oct. 16, with Gillian reluctantly accompanying him.
Hjalmar never lost his love for his native Norway, but he had a great affection for St. Stephen. Although a quiet and very private person, he enjoyed talking to people, especially about the state of the economy and finances; also (if he could get them to listen!), about his other great interest, the Second World War! Viking sagas sometimes had a way of creeping in, too.
When he became ill and was finally diagnosed with ALS, he was stoic about his worsening condition and never complained, only once admitting, “This is so hard.”
His family, now grown to include Evan Justason, Victoria’s husband, are grateful that he no longer has to suffer every day, but they will miss him more than words can say. They also want to thank everyone for their great kindness and support. It is truly appreciated.
Funeral service was held on Monday, April 21, 2008 at 2 p.m., from the Christ Anglican Church, Prince William Street, St. Stephen, N.B.
There was no visitation by request.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances to the ALS Society would be appreciated by the family.
